How to choose a domain name?

If you want to make a web or blog, the very first step will be choosing a domain name. I always say that a new blog or site is like new born baby. And a domain is like your baby’s name but only different is most of the time we decide the name after baby’s born. But we need to choose the domain name before making the site. Many people don’t care too much on domain name. But that’s not fair. We should choose a domain name wisely otherwise we may regret later.

Yea I know there are lots of site already got Hugh success without caring too much on domain name. But do you know how? They created brand on that name. If you got thousands of dollar to spend to market your site I mean brand your site, then you may not be too worry with your domain name. But there are lots of people out there who wants to get be noticed by other without spending too much money. So we should go in a classic way. Today I am going to give you some guideline to choose a domain name for your site.


Try to stay among .com, .net and .org: There are lots of domain extension like .com, .net, .org, .ws , .me, info out there to purchase. But you shouldn’t select any one which is available for your targeted keyword. Suppose you want to buy a domain name with food. But food.com is not available so you may want to buy food.ws. But that isn’t wise decision. At first try to buy .com extension. If its not possible just then go for .net or .org but don’t go for other extension.

Try to keep your domain short: I always like short name it doesn’t matter its peoples name or domain name. So I think people also like short name as I am among the people. Lol. It’s said that one word is gold; two words is gold while selecting a domain name. Short domain is easy to write and remember. So always try to keep your domain name as short as possible. Even if you want to brand your domain name, you should keep it short. And if you do so people will feel comfort with your domain name.


Make your domain name easy to remember: Oh! Yesterday I visited a great site goolixhurcelane.com. That’s a really amazing site!
Well now tell me in that above line which domain name I used? Hahaha I am sure you can’t tell me unless you read that name again or you got a super photographic brain. I used the name, the name oh I forget it too, let me copy and past that, well I used the name goolixhurcelane.com. So have you understood why you should use a name which is easy to remember? So always try to make your domain name short and if in case it’s long try to use meaningful word like howtomakemyblog.com. Look at the name is really not a short name. It’s really easy to member.

Make your domain unique: If you want to be a successful with your site, your site needs to be unique. And your domain name has no exception. So don’t use any domain name which is already popular to use its popularity. Suppose problogger.net is Darren’s blog and very popular. So you may think to make a site with problogger.org or some other extension. But never do that.

Don’t use hyphens and number: while choosing a domain name always try to avoid number and hyphens. Those two makes your domain name more complex and hard to type. I know 99designs.com is popular site even though it uses number as domain name. But still I will say go away from number and hyphens.

Keep it relevant with your site: The relevancy of domain name with site content is really important. It’s helpful both for human and search engine. So try to choose and domain name which gives an idea about your site content. If you choose a domain like technew.com, people will think its all about technology news.

Don’t use own name as domain name: Don’t use your name as domain name unless it’s your personal site. I know many people will argue me about that. I know lots of people out there who use own name just because they want to brand their name. Well now tell me do you know Darren Rowse? If you don’t then I am also with you that Darren has made a big mistake because he hasn’t made a site with domain Darrenrowse.com. But if you know him then I have to say that you don’t have to use your name to brand yourself. Darren rowse already has branded him without using his name as domain. Many people will show johnchow.com as a successful blogger who using own name as domain name. Yes I know that. What will you do if I can show 100 failor people who fail to make their site popular with their own name as domain name?
